Odds and Ends

[monday: 3.4; tuesday: 3.4; today: 3.4 ]

The weather station seems to be working better these days.  I did an update of the operating system software and I also wrote a little script which restarts the networking device every 24 hours.  Between those two I seem to have shaken off the pattern of running for 2-3 days and dying.  I also bought another BeagleBoneBlack (BBB) in case I needed to take the next step and do a replacement.  That one is sitting here on my desk, still in the box.

I worked the 40 meter fox hunt last night.  The last few weeks I’ve just been turning on the radio toward the end of the hunt period and picking off the fox after most of the action has died down.

I’m preparing a grant request for the WMFH-LP project from 4-County Electric, our local utility company.  I had asked them a few months ago about whether they would be interested in sponsoring our content and they didn’t have any budget for that kind of thing.  But then a few days ago I received an email that they have established a foundation and are now open for grant requests, an interesting development.  So I worked up an application.

And to do that application I needed a “financial statement”.  I am glad to say that my accounting actually added up to a rational picture for 2014.  I am not an accountant, I freely admit it.  I would not have gotten into the non-profit arena in this way except for the fact that I think this project will run on not much cash.  Smoozing donors and doing fund-raiser mailings, etc. etc. is not my thing.  I don’t even send Christmas cards  (and sometimes forget birthdays of close relatives).  I mean to do enough bookkeeping to keep things on the up-and-up and show that we are doing so.  If it gets bigger than that, I’m hiring someone else to do it!

Ham radio projects:  not much happening there.  But that’s OK, I can always come back to them.

The wisteria season is upon us.  I was on my run yesterday and I detected the sweet smell, sure enough it is blooming near the intersection of Watson Road and Evans Road.  The trees are leafing out.  Summer will soon be here.
