[Yesterday: 5 miles]
I did a couple of good deeds for the ham radio club this weekend.
On Friday evening I climbed up the tower to remove an old business band VHF antenna. I had never been up this tower before. It is a non-guyed model, starts wider at the bottom with bolt-together pieces and then transitions to solid-rod welded sections for the top. It didn’t look very impressive as I was going up. But once I was up there and strapped in, it was solid and I had no trouble.
Getting the VHF antenna down was a challenge. I thought the thing looked to be about 10 feet long but I was off by a long shot. It was a 21-foot folded dipole array, probably a Decibel Products DB-224; not real heavy, but kind of difficult to manage when you are standing at the top of the tower.
But I did get it down and get myself down and all done before dark. So I count it as a win.
Then earlier this morning I went in with my tools and worked on the door to our meeting room. It is a cheap hollow-core 2-hinge door and the bottom hinge was no longer holding; the door was cracked and the hinge screws were falling out. I did a bit of gluing, clamping and used some longer screws. In the end the door seemed to be in better shape.
