[Today’s run: 2 miles with wife and dog]
I worked on this radio all afternoon on Sunday. I tested the tubes, replaced a capacitor, and generally wrestled with it. I’m not sure I really did any good, but it was interesting. I feel like I know a bit about how it works.
One thing that I went over multiple times: the BFO operates on 230 kHz while the IF is 460 kHz. I tweaked that thing every way I could see, even changed out a part, to no avail. I guess in the BFO mixer it must handle the 230 kHz ok. The BFO does appear to work, as in, do it’s job.
You can see in this picture that I built an ugly speaker to use with this on the 500 Ohm port. It is just a regular 8 ohm speaker but I used a 120V/12V transformer from my junk box. I have it wired up with the 120 side going to the radio and the 12 side going to the speaker. It seems to work ok: good sound and the controls are in normal operating range. The box I made for it is just plain ugly!
I got it all buttoned up, then noticed a bad hum on the speaker. That’s not right. I’ll have to dive in again and see about that.
