West Lowndes football

[Today’s run:  6 miles with Boardtown Runners… ran all the way]

Last night we attended the first half of the home football game at West Lowndes High School against the Ethel, MS Tigers.  (Ethel is about 2/3 of the way to Jackson, on Highway 12, nearly to Kosciusko).

We got there right as the national anthem was being sung.  Attendance was moderate. I don’t know how the stands usually look, but we didn’t have any trouble finding a seat.

West Lowndes has had a rough start to their season.  They lost two games to much larger schools, out of their conference.  But they handled the Ethel team very well.

At the start the West Lowndes Tigers appeared to have some trouble with offsides penalties. But when they got plays off things went pretty well.  Ethel was able to move on their ground game ok.

We were somewhat mystified by the Ethel play.  The first kickoff was a squib to the left.  The next kicking opportunity was an extra point, and they attempted a 2-point conversion (a running play) instead of kicking.  Then the next kickoff was a squib to the right.  We started to notice that they avoided all kicking situations as best they could.  On 4th downs they ran a regular play.  So I guess they don’t have a kicker!

We left at halftime because it was getting to be our bedtime and we had an early morning the next day  (today).  West Lowndes Tigers were up 22 to 6.

The newspaper this morning says they won the game 42-22.  (The newspaper also says those squib kicks were “trick plays”… I don’t think so.)
