Run through history

[Today’s run: 6.2 miles  (10k)]

We ran the Run Through History 10k today over in Vicksburg, MS.

Had never been to Vicksburg before.  What little we saw seemed like an interesting town.  They straddle I-20, right on the Mississippi River.  We did not get down to the river but did drive toward downtown just a bit while searching for the race start.

The race is run in the Vicksburg National Military Park, an operation of the US Department of Interior.

The route is very hilly but scenic.  I was completely discombobulated about directions.  Now that I see the course map online it makes a bit more sense.

The place is chock full of monuments and signs marking the approximate locations of various battle units of the US Civil War.  There are red signs for Confederate positions and blue signs for Union positions. Some of the markers are very large granite monuments.

The run is on the main road loops and they had the road completely closed off for the race.  That was really nice.  They also had a lot of volunteer help, including probably a hundred Americorps folks cheering us on.

It was very nice race.  I would like to do it again sometime.   And the park was very pleasant.  It would be nice to just walk those loops again and read all of the markers and monuments.
