Proud of my kids

[Today’s run: rest day]

My wife and I have two children, a daughter and a son.

Our daughter recently called to talk about a new opportunity at her work.  She has been working hourly at a retail food company for quite a while.  Recently the manager left and she moved up from assistant manager to acting manager.

Today she called and wanted to talk about the offer made to her to take over as a salaried manager.  Wow!  That is quite a step up for her.  I’ve always known that she is a hard worker.  She puts in a lot of effort on her job and she is able to get other people organized and keep them moving forward.  I think she will be an excellent manager.  I think, someday, she would do well owning a restaurant of her own, or more than one!

When she called, I was trying to get a grip on how her new salary income would compare with what she had been earning and what other new expenses she would have, etc.  Later on I thought that I really wasn’t as enthusiastic as I should have been.  This is a big accomplishment!

Our son is a student at the university about half an hour from us.  He is doing really well in his studies and I am proud of him too.  Some of the stuff he is studying is still similar to what I studied 30 years ago, so we can talk about it.  But he is getting more into his specialty area of study and soon I’ll only be able to ask him questions about it and not put in my “in the old days” 2 cents.

So we are moving along to where my role is more encouragement and enthusiasm.  I’m going to have to shift my mindset a bit and not be too stuck in Mr. Engineer mode.
