73.8 Mile Warm Up

On April 1, 2016, you would have found me in Austin, Texas, at a running friend’s house. I had made the drive to meet her and some other mutual running friends there in Austin and to run the Austin 10/20. It was a fun, fun weekend!!!

When I arrived at her house, I had one item of business to attend to before the weekend racing festivities could begin.  I needed to register for my first 100 Mile race.

The registration for Rocky Raccoon 100 was slated to open that afternoon and I wanted to register on the first day it was open.  For some reason, the thought of registering for my first 100 Miler on April Fool’s Day seemed apropos.

I was excited to be registering for this race because it was to be my birthday present.  The race is 15 days before my 55th birthday.  The thought of leaning *very* hard on 55 years old and running a 100 Miler struck me as a pretty sweet birthday present!

Today is February 1, 2017, and this morning I ran my last training run for that race!  It was a quick 20 minute run.

MFH (My Favorite Husband) and I had to take Paxton, Kali and Castro to “Reggie’s House” to play for while we were going to be gone for the race.  We drove over to Reggie’s this morning and dropped the animals off.  MFH then drove 20 minutes away and waited for me to run to him…and I realize that is tons more about my morning than any of you ever wanted to know!

This afternoon will be spent packing because tomorrow morning we load up the car and head to Texas for the race!

I. Can’t. Wait!!!

To be honest, the thought of running 100 miles is a bit overwhelming.  Actually, it’s a LOT overwhelming!  It’s best to break it into smaller, more mind friendly pieces:

The race is five, 20 mile loops. The first 60 miles, three loops, I’ll be running on my own. On the fourth loop, I’ll be picking up my first pacer. She’ll run with me and keep me going to mile 80.  At mile 80, I’ll pick up my second pacer and she’ll be dragging my sorry self the remaining 20 miles, the last loop(!) of this race.

I’ve got to give a shout out here to my amazing racing team, Renegade Endurance.  There’s not a better racing team anywhere!!!  This race is a huge group effort!  One woman has been setting up the pacing schedule for the 5 of us from the team running Rocky Raccoon.  The team has a few tents and camping sites for the race.  It’s all of us working together to help each other reach some pretty amazing goals!  Good people, Renegades!

Weather stalking commenced two weeks ago for this event.  Up until yesterday, it looked like it would be cool and overcast and *maybe* a little bit of rain. Now, it looks like it might be a tad toasty with a little bit of rain.
