This morning dawned bright and sunny! It looked super pretty out there. I was scheduled for a 14 miler, so I got myself ready and headed on out the door.
If you remember, yesterday I had run a 6 mile recovery run from Saturday’s marathon. My legs were very unhappy with me yesterday! That run hurt like the dickens, but I got it done and then went and had my eye surgery in the afternoon. All was well.
*Funny story about the eye surgery. I was sitting in the waiting room while my eyes fuzzed. It was rather crowded so we were packed in there pretty tight. I was sitting next to a lady. It didn’t take long before I realized she was very seriously out. I mean, she was sound asleep! She started snoring. Poor lady. She must’ve been waiting there for quite a while.*
This morning, my coach had me scheduled for 14 miles. Normally, that is a nice comfortable run so I bounded out the door with a skip in my step. I went down the cul-de-sac (that is .33 miles and it feel like free mileage to me, so I hit it with every pass on my street. Silly, I know.) and then headed on up my road. I took a peek at my trusty Garmin and it said I was at an 11:00 pace. Sweet!
I had planned to run along Highway 45 S for a mile, cross the highway (if it wasn’t too busy) and run on over to Schaeffer’s Chapel. I love running to the Chapel because it’s this pretty little Chapel out in the middle of no-where in Mississippi. Running there makes me happy.
When I hit Evans Road, however, I was met by a blast of strong wind. Holy Cow! I struggled through the wind to the top of Evans and turned onto Robinson Rd. There is a little MB Church there a half mile away and I like to run to it…it feels like free mileage, too!
I made it to the church on Robinson and retraced my steps all the way to the other end of Robinson where I would cross the Highway. I stepped out onto the old part of the Highway (the part under construction). This part of the run had no trees or anything. It was completely exposed for the next 5(ish) miles. I was almost blown over. Nope. This would not work, so I turned around.
Hmmm…
I ended up fighting with that wind for 8.13 miles. It was terrible!!!
At about mile 5, my 11:00 pace was down to a 12:30 pace and was steadily dropping. My legs were lead. I wasn’t winded or anything. The rest of me felt fine! I think it was just having run the marathon on Sat. 6 miles yesterday and then fighting that nasty wind today…it was too much.
I cried “Uncle” at mile 8.13. I felt like a failure. Sometimes, the body just won’t do what you want it to do. It is better to listen to the body than to try to force it into submission. Today, I listened.
When I came into the house, I looked up the NWS site only to discover that we were having sustained winds of 17 MPH with gusts of 30 MPH. No wonder that run was so hard!
Anyway, I have a decision to make. Tonight we have a low of 15. The wind tomorrow morning is supposed to be 15 MPH with 20 MPH gusts. Uber cold. It is supposed to be a rest day. BUT…
Friday I am supposed to run 8. We are supposed to have freezing rain on Friday. Ugh.
Thursday (tomorrow) my sister and I are meeting for lunch so I can’t fiddle around in the morning and wait for it to warm up. I have to hop out of bed and get it done.
So, do I run on Thursday in the super cold temps or do I wait until Friday and run in the freezing rain? OR…this is the idea I like! Take BOTH days off and run in Thunderstorms on Saturday morning with the running group!? HA!
If I put it off until Saturday, at least MFH (My Favorite Husband) will be home and we can run together. 🙂
