Good Day To Be A Chicken

This morning, when I went outdooors to let the chickens out for the day, I shared some good news with them.  I told them that a cool front was on the way!

The hens just wanted breakfast and seemed uninterested in the news.  Peter, however, wasn’t grouchy like he usually is.  He seemed happy to hear it.  This was…odd.

I went out different times throughout the day to check on them.  The hens were in good moods and Peter was, too!  What was up with this!?!

Remember I told you the other day that they were molting.  They still are.  Maybe they are coming to terms with the embarrassment of being naked in front of the entire neighborhood?  Personally, I think they can tell (aside from me telling them) that we are going to get a break from the heat.

I have 9 hens.  At “Bedtime for Birdies,” I collect the eggs.  Usually, I get 4-5 eggs.  Today, every. single. hen, laid an egg!  They were feeling mighty fine today!

I am happy to see this.  They’ve had a rough summer.  It’s been hot and humid and it is just hard to keep cool, avoid Peter’s amorous advances, and lay eggs.  They deserve a break!

So, this evening at “Bedtime for Birdies,” one by one, the Ladies contentedly trotted into the chicken tractor with Peter bringing up the rear.  They pecked happily at their evening treat of freeze dried meal worms and then went up the ladder to roost.

It was a good day to be a chicken.    🙂
