I have the cutest, sweetest chickens in the world. They are so much fun! Hilarious, too!
It is averaging in the mid-high 90’s by early afternoon now in Mississippi. Ice water is expected. That is just the facts. The chickens begin kicking up a fuss around 12:30-1:00 pm because they are hot.
“Mom! Where is the ice!?!” they cluck.
Spoiled. Possibly. Maybe not? 🙂
Today, I decided they needed a new treat to cool them down. Watermelon. Mmmm!!! Who does not love watermelon on a hot day? My chickens are no exception.
MFH (My Favorite Husband) and I had errands to run right after lunch today. We paid some bills and stopped for a Hot Fudge Malt. Shot my calories for the day right out the window. Sometimes, you just have to do that, right!?!
As we were getting ready to drive home, MFH made the mistake of asking me, “Is there anything else you need while we are in town?” I thought for a moment and remembered that I needed to get Paxton’s (the dog) heartworm medication. We headed off to the vet office.
While we were driving to the Vet, I remembered that I had been wanting to pick up a watermelon for the chickens.
MFH does not like buying “frivolous” stuff for the chickens.
“But they really like it, Dear.” I lament. And we go and buy it. He’s so cute!
We continued on our way to the Vet office and arrived only to find out that they close from 12:00-1:00 for lunch. Rats. MFH decided we would go buy a watermelon while we waited for the vet’s office to open.
We went to Food Giant. Neither one of us had been there before. No reason, really, we had just never shopped there. They did not have any watermelons. Hard to believe, but true. So, we drove down the street to Sunflower Market. We have shopped there a couple of time. Over priced stuff.
They had watermelons. They were good sized, too! We bought one and left to go back to the Vet.
The Vet was open when we arrived so I popped into the office and bought Paxton’s heartworm stuff for the month. We came home after that.
As soon as we got home, I cut into the melon. It was a nice one! I cut off a ring, cut that in half, then I toddled on out the door to the chicken’s area.
“Cluck, cluck, cluck!” I called.
The chickens came running out of their chicken tractor. They had been inside because it is shady in there. They know that when I call, I have a treat.
I dropped the two pieces of melon on the ground and they dove right in! Everybody except for Peter, the Rooster. He has got to stop that. He stood there, again, just like yesterday and crowed for all he was worth.
“Watermelon!!!” he was telling everybody in the entire neighborhood.
By the time he shut up, it was almost gone. Those ladies meant business with that melon! He was able to get some, but not a whole bunch. Silly chicken. 🙂
