Wax processing

[Today’s run: 4 miles]

After we did some honey gathering last weekend, this week I started in on the wax processing.  I actually had some wax left over from our work last spring too.  Time to get this stuff worked down.

The impurities in the wax can get moldy.  The wax itself won’t.  So the best way to keep it is to purify it.

I put wax and some water in an old coffee pot.  I melt the wax on a hotplate.  Then I pour the whole thing through  about 8 layers of cheesecloth into this french press.  I’m just using the french press as a tall beaker.

In this picture you can see the honey water on the bottom and the melted wax on top.  Impurities will float between the two.  When the wax cools it hardens and shrinks.  I can dump it out, dump the water out and use a knife to trim off some of the gunk.

If I need to I can run this through again with another chunk and make a taller column.

There is about a cup of wax here.  I think ended up with about 4 cups total.
