Making a big mess

[Yesterday: 7 miles; today: rest day]

My wife dreamed up a house project recently and today we dove into it.

She decided she wanted some wainscoting in the dining room/kitchen area.  We bought the stuff at Lowes yesterday.  It is a pressed board material, a lot like that brown pegboard stuff.  But one side has faux bead-board shape on it.  And it comes in 4×8 sheets.  We bought two sheets of that and some nicely shaped trim called chair-rail.

Like I say, today we got started. I pulled off the trim on the bottom of the wall.  We scraped down the big gobs of putty the builders of the place used to fill their cracks and all.

Then we cut three panels about 40 inches high from our two big sheets.  Got those mounted on the wall with Liquid Nails and lots of brads from the brad nailer.  Then we ran the chair rail piece through the table saw to rip it down just a bit and nailed it against the wall just above the bead board stuff.

Later this week I will have to put in more bead board on two stub walls that intersect, and then do some more trimming out.

After that she wants to paint the whole kitchen.

I’m not a very good trim carpenter.  I am going to try to “cope” the chair rail inside corners.  And I need to piece together two pieces of door trim to make one longer one.  We shall see how all that comes out.  I may resort to great globs of putty and caulk.

Anyway  about the mess, cutting the brown board stuff in the garage made lots of brown sawdust.  And when we were done there was more of that in the kitchen too.  We were tired and we just shoved things to one side and put our feet up.

I’m still tired!
