Running progress

[Today’s run: 4.6 miles with wife]

The last two Sunday’s we have run on the new pavement of the not-yet-open lane of Highway 45. It is one mile from our house to the highway, then another mile-plus up to the bridge over the railroad tracks. Last week they put in more asphalt and we were wondering if the road was getting close to being ready for car traffic. But they have not yet put in the guardrail at the bridge. So it is going to be awhile yet.

I have been running with my wife. She is on a 10k program and has us signed up to do a 12k around New Year’s down in Hattiesburg, MS. Her program is three days a week. I have been doing that with her and then adding on the Boardtown Runner’s outing on Saturday. That gives me four days and about 20 miles per week, maybe a little less until we get ramped up a bit more in the 10k program.

It has been interesting to run with my wife. She used to run when our kids were just born. But she was unable to do that kind of thing for most of the last 7-8 years, and never really had much interest in it anyway. Her sister started a 5k program earlier this fall and they both got into that and now both are doing the 10k program. I joke with them that they will be doing marathons within a year. They are competitive people! It wouldn’t surprise me.

I don’t have anything planned after the 12k in Hattiesburg. There is a conference of the Dead Runners Society in Austin, TX in February. I wouldn’t mind going to that, but I kind of doubt it will happen. I would have to take some time off and pay for pet boarding and the travel expenses.

More likely would be the half marathon in Starkville in January. I did that two years ago but missed last year because of work related travel. They take you in a bus out to Phoeba and you start from there and run in to Starkville, ending at the OCH hospital.

I ran just under 12 miles this last Saturday. Had to walk for about a quarter mile when my leg started getting a tight spot. But otherwise things went ok. I think I could finish a half marathon with a little bit of training. I wouldn’t be burning up the road but I could get from one end to the other.

My biggest problem right now is I still have an extra 15 lbs on top of what I weighed last year, probably 25 on top of what I weighed when I did my marathon a year ago last October. I’m not sure where this is coming from. I’m not eating more than I was then. I’m not running 30,35,40 miles a week either. Maybe I should skip eating one day a week. I don’t know. I guess I’ve decided not to worry about it right now, unless my clothes start to get tight(er) or something.
