C25K

Today’s Run:  Rest day

One year ago tomorrow I began a C25K program with my sister.  Mississippi State University offers this program every Fall and my sister decided to do the program and asked me if I would do it with her.  I thought to myself, “Sure!  No problem!” and promised to participate.

Wait!  What is C25K?  It is Couch to 5K.  Taking sedentary people (couch) and in 8-9 weeks have them ready and actually run a 5K race (3.1 miles).

So, I was committed and ready to go.  You begin with a period of walking interspersed with a period of running~say walk 1 min. run 30 sec. until you are running 20 min. without stopping, etc.  It sounded pretty easy.  Until my knees decided to complain.  If I had not made that promise to my sister, there is NO WAY I would have completed that program.  But “A promise is a promise” and I saw it through to the successful completion of the 5K race.  There is no feeling like crossing a finish line.  You may cross the line dead last, but you successfully complete the race.

So, since then, there have been other races and other training programs.  The one I am on right now is Hal Higdon’s intermediate level training program for the Half Marathon.  So far, so good.  The distance has not been too tough, it is just that you run five days out of the week instead of the three I was used to.  So, there have been challenges to face.  The Half Marathon is Nov. 3 and I am looking forward to crossing that finish line as well.  The goal for this race is to finish.

All this to say, my sister and I have reached our one year anniversary as runners.  We have stuck with it and can officially call ourselves runners.  Cool beans!
