Today’s Run: 50 min lifting at the “Y”
Growing up in the Mid-West, I learned to appreciate things that related to farming. Even though I lived in the city, we had a major dairy in our community. I grew up enjoying the best and freshest diary products that I have yet to find surpassed today.
So now, living in the South, I have learned that I need to have some new appreciations of things. One of these is in the tree/bush category. Crepe Myrtle’s.
When we first moved to Mississippi, I could not stand Crepe Myrtle’s! I did not like how they looked. I did nor like how they smelled. I did not like them “here or there”, I did “not like them anywhere”! Now, three years later, I kinda like them! They come in different colors and shapes and sizes.
We have two different shapes along the front of our house (eight Crepe Myrtle’s in all), the tall scraggly ones and the short round ones. The short rounds ones are white and the tall ones are a real pretty dark pink. They do well in the hot, hot, hot weather and they bloom well. They add color to a dry climate. I think I like them.
You have to prune Crepe Myrtle’s in January. This is the only month during the year that they recommend pruning. I guess it has to do with the sap not running, or something. They are supposed to be dormant. So, every January, out I toddle on out with my pruning shears and cut the living daylights out of those trees/bushes! They always grow back. They grow back a lot! I do not think you can kill a Crepe Myrtle.
So, I tell myself that I am broadening my horizons. I am beginning to appreciate new things. I am learning to like the Crepe Myrtle.
