Yesterdays blog ended up with an “unfortunate” title…”I Was Late.”
No. The rabbit did NOT die. There is no bun in the oven. I am not pregnant.
But, I would like to thank everybody who took the time to send off notes of congratulations. That was very sweet! I am sorry if I misled you.
I fully intended to run today and mow tomorrow but the National Weather Service changed my plans for me. Lots and lots and lots of rain tomorrow. That means a very soggy yard for a few days on a yard that already needs mowed. Nope. Decided to mow today.
Tomorrow will be a rest day, too. This time, though, I will really rest. No mowing. Just housework. HA! With all the rain/thunderstorms there will be no run tomorrow.
Tomorrow was supposed to be my long run day. I’m not going to risk being a long way from home, running, in a thunderstorm. The long run will have to wait until Thursday. As a bonus, we are having a cold front come through on Wednesday evening and the high is only supposed to get to 75F on Thursday! Awesome!!! Maybe I will not melt on my run!
The chickens were happy to see the mower today. I told you they were opportunists. This morning MFH (My Favorite Husband) and I relocated the chicken tractor. Those lucky chickens already had fresh grass and new bugs from that, but with the mowing, that meant even more bugs! They were pleased. I watched them happily chasing bugs and eating them as I was making passes on the mower.
We have a very large oak tree on the SW corner of our property. It had a limb that was hanging very, very low. It was too low for me to get under to “trim the verge.” MFH took a saw last week and cut off that low branch. I was able to zoom under the tree today and neaten up that area. The chickens are content and so am I.
So many things pop into my head while I mow. It really is a relaxing time.
I was disappointed in the lack of fire ant hills today. They have gone deep into the ground right now. The ground is very dry and cracking in some areas of the yard. If we get all the rain we are supposed to, they will be popping up again all around the yard and I will get to decimate some ant hills when I mow next week. Never fear! I know of a few people who are interested in my glee of destroying ant hills. 🙂
I suited up for the last bit of mowing. It was 91F. I put on 2 pairs of jeans. Two long sleeved shirts, rubber rain boots, bee jacket, pith helmet and veil and long sleeved leather gloves. I headed on out for the dreaded part of mowing. Cutting the grass around the bees.
It only takes about a half hour but in all those clothes, it is a sauna. I begin down close the the field behind our house on the South and gradually get closer and closer to the bees. It is my theory that they will get used to the noise of the mower and not come after me.
Wrong.
Well, only partially wrong. 5 of the 6 hives could not have cared less about my mowing all around their hives. That 6th hive though, the “grouchy hive” lived up to its name. Again.
Man. Those bees are MEAN! They came literally pouring out of that hive! They did not want me any where near their hive. Some days, I think about dousing that hive with gasoline and lighting a match. I cannot get into that hive to extract honey or anything. It is my theory that they are Africanized. That is the only thing that can explain their aggressive behavior. In the meantime, they chase me back up the house each and every time I mow.
Those are the things I thought about and experienced while mowing today. Tomorrow, housework. And, really, I am NOT pregnant.
