Shakerag Half Marathon Report

Yesterday’s Run:  13.1 miles   Today’s Run:  Rest Day

Yesterday I ran the Shakerag Half Marathon in Tupelo, Mississippi.  This was advertised as a “Medium Advanced Half Marathon”~whatever that is supposed to mean.  I had entered it on a whim…as a training run for my Ultra.

It was a lovely day to be running!  Overcast skies.  Low 50’s F.  Light breeze.  Perfect!

The water stops were every two miles and were supported by very enthusiastic people.  Lots of signs and costumes and cheering and most important of all…water and Gatorade!  The water stops were great.

The traffic control was terrific, too.  We began and ended the race (out and back again route) on a busy, undivided four lane highway in downtown Tupelo.  The rest of the miles were out of the city limits in a residential area full of rolling hills.  Very pretty.

Not a lot of people out cheering though.  There was one family at the end of their driveway cheering and one lone guy with his guitar playing.  That was it.  A little disappointing in that regards.

I was hoping that this route did not have hills.  It did.  Itty bitty hills compared to the marathon I just finished a few weeks ago but they were still there.  Some day I am going to run a flat as a board road race!

My fastest half marathon up until yesterday was 2:48.  Yesterday’s time was 2: 36.  I am thrilled with the time!  I guess all that training I have been doing has paid off!

That was the last race of 2013 for me.  My next scheduled race is January 1, 2014.  The Steam Whistle 12K in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.  MFH (My Favorite Husband) and I will be running that one together (yesterday’s race I ran solo).  The January 1, 2014 12K will have (instead of bananas) black eyed peas and cabbage for good luck in the New Year!!!  Can’t wait!!!
