We are wrapping up our racation (race+vacation=racation) in Maine today. We will leave tomorrow for a return to Boston to drop our daughter off at Logan airport. We have had the best of the best possible time it is possibly possible to have!!!
Today, we visited a Civil War Museum in Bethel, Maine.
When you think of the Civil War, do you think of Maine? Me neither. But they had 9,000 soldiers. 180 from the town of Bethel out of which 52 returned.
The exhibit at the museum was centered around this two men one of which was a Major Gideon Hastings. They had the bullet on display that he received at Antietam. He did not have the bullet removed until twenty years after the end of the war. It was a large bullet and I think having that in you for twenty years would have been uncomfortable.
They also had a quilt on display that showed the history of Bethel, Maine in regards to the Civil War. It was a very nice quilt! I took a few pics of that for my sister because she quilts. They also had the instructions for the quilt so you could make your own! Cool Beans! AND the instructions were at no charge!!! Even more Cool Beans and Chilled :Legumes!!! So, I picked up the instructions for my sister, too.
We ended up walking around the downtown area of Bethel, Maine. We are here in between tourist seasons~the end of summer and before skiing so not a lot of shops were open. That was probably a good thing for our plastic money 🙂
Just a few more days and we will be back home in Mississippi. I think I am about ready to go home. It is starting to be chilly in the mornings and it might (horrors!!!) SNOW! That would not do! So, I think I am ready to go back south.
