Today’s Run: Rest Day
Call me Ishmael. Probably one of the most famous introductions known to mankind (aside from, “It was a dark and stormy night…”). This small sentence draws the reader into one of the most exciting adventure stories ever written. Or at least that is what my husband tells me. I must admit to never being able to get past that first sentence. I admit to finding Moby Dick a dull read.
Now, War and Peace on the other hand, that is riveting reading. Who knew that they wrote soap opera stories back in 1869. This book is epic in scale and has become one of the most important works of literature. And it is LOOONG. Tolstoy knew what he was doing when he wrote that chronicle.
I had a discussion with a MFP friend today regarding Moby Dick, War and Peace and Zig Ziegler. We both agree, at least I think we do, that people misquote things and people think that Moby Dick is a nice fishing tale. The one that got away, as it were.
Nobody seems to know what War and Peace is about. I’ll give you a clue…war and peace! Did you know that there are approximately 160 real people named or referred to in this novel? Fascinating! This book Begins in the year 1805 during the reign of Alexander I and leads up to the 1812 French invasion of Russia by Napoleon. It covers the story of five aristocratic families and their personal lives. It reads like an old fashioned soap opera!
I read this book while I was expecting my son. I had a complicated pregnancy and was on complete bed rest from the beginning of my 6th month until delivery. I utilized my time by taking care of my 14 mo. old daughter and reading this wonderful historical fiction. Moby Dick cannot hold a candle to War and Peace.
Do they live happily ever after? You will just have to pick up a copy! It is not a light read, but it is a page turner. Maybe after you read War and Peace, you will read Moby Dick for me. I hear it is a story about a fish…
