Pavement Ends

Today’s Run:  12.25 miles

Two of the most terrifying words you can hear on a very long run are
“Pavement Ends”.  We had a 12.25 mile run today with the running group and three miles into the run we encountered the dreaded sign, “Pavement Ends”.  Yikes!  I started dragging my feet.  Asphalt is my friend on long runs.  This sign meant gravel.  Gravel for the next six miles.  Oh no!!!

We ran the “Chinese Restaurant Route” today.  I knew ahead of time about the gravel but being the eternal optimist that I am, I was hoping against hope that maybe they had paved this section of road since the last time we had run it.  Nope.  Rats.

Why do they call this route the “Chinese Restaurant Route”?  Well, there is this derelict building that it is rumored to be, sometime in the last 20 years, to have been a Chinese Restaurant.  Now, you have to understand that this is all conjuncture. I think it was someone’s old farm building that they let go and chose not to maintain.  Either way, the “Chinese Restaurant Route” it is and it has six miles of gravel and it does not look like they will be paving it anytime in the near future.

It is a lovely route.  It goes through field and dairy land.  The Honeysuckles were in bloom and the air was full of the sweet, heavy fragrance.  The sky was overcast.  This was good because it was in the 70’s F. and 95% humidity.  We were pretty warm.  But it was beautiful and we enjoyed ourselves.  We were also happy to be done!
