Long, Slow Run

Today’s Run: 11.4 miles

A staple in every runners “diet” is the long, slow run.  During the majority of the week, a runner will be doing quick 3-5 mile runs.  Just “pop” them off without a thought.  But come the weekend, it is time for the “Long, slow run”.

Much has been written about the benefits of this long run.  A lot of people try to take this long run too fast.  They try to run their 8+ miles the same pace as their 3-5 mile runs.  Wrong, wrong, wrong.  They do not call it the long, SLOW run for nothing!!!

If you try to take this long run too fast, you are asking for injury.  You are trying to achieve aerobic benefit from this run and in taking it too fast, you are actually breaking down muscle instead of going into the fat stores for your energy needs.

So, on weekends, when you see some poor soul slogging it out along the side of the road and they look like they are about ready to drop, first of all-move over and give them some room and THEN ask yourself, “I wonder how many miles they did today?  I wonder if this is their long, slow run day?  And wish them well”.
