Eico HF-85 tube stereo preamp

[Today’s Run: 3.2 miles]

I moved ahead a little bit recently with the Eico HF-85 stereo preamp. I had ordered a custom multi-section power supply capacitor, and I’ve had that for awhile. The other day I made a list of all of the molded, rolled paper and electrolytics got those ordered. And they have arrived.

The next step is to dive in and do the component replacement.

That should take care of most of the electronics restoration. I have some further work to do on the knobs. I may need to order some plastic polish to get them into shape.

In an old style stereo system the pre-amp is mostly a switching box. All of the sources are plugged into it and the output is plugged into a power amplifier which boosts the level to drive speakers. Eventually both the switching part and the amp part were combined into one box (like my Fisher X-100). Later iterations then combined the AM/FM tuner with the switching amp to make something called a receiver. I think that is about as compact as things got while using vacuum tubes.
