[Today’s run: 3 miles of hills in town]
When I was a kid there was a radio show on the WOI public radio station called The Book Club. A fellow named Doug Brown would read for an hour. He was an entertaining reader.
Since we started this audio books radio station I have tried to find out if any of his stuff is still around.
It turns out that the ISU library has some of it, but not very much. They sent me a list and a price sheet for what it would take to get copies. The stuff is on casette tapes, even some reel-to-reel tapes, and a few CDs. Anyway, I picked out a few, was told they were not clean copies, so I picked out a few others.
Doug Brown passed away a few years ago but his widow lives in Ames. The library folks work with her to get permission to copy the material, and I had a bit of email conversation with her. She was very gracious.
Everyone was very helpful. But there just isn’t much out there to be had. He did this every week day for 20 or more years. Some of what he read were modern works under copyright. I wonder if that is why they didn’t record very much; in order to avoid copyright problems with the book publishers (or maybe they had a one-time-use license of some sort).
