Train Wreck, 1877

[Today’s run: 4.5 miles]

On our recent quick stop in Iowa we went on a run on a rails-to-trails path which starts in Pleasant Hill and goes northeast.  We went as far as Altoona, 5 miles, then turned around.  It was a very pleasant run.

About half of the trip was on old railroad bed and about a mile south of Altoona is this plaque commemorating a train wreck in 1877.

I have some family history with this train wreck.  One of my great.* grandmothers was born on the day this wreck took place.  Her father was the doctor, and he went off to the wreck to help there  instead of staying home to help with the delivery.  Or so the story goes.
