Fun with HW-8

[Today’s run: 6 miles – Schaffer’s Chapel]

There was a small QRP contest on Sunday evening and I pulled the old HW-8 down off of the shelf.  I guess it is my go-to multi-band QRP radio  (my _only_ multi-band QRP radio).

I was able to get a few good contacts with the thing.

Then I fired it up again this evening and was able to get the attention of VO2NS in Labrador City, way up north in Canada.  According to QRZ.com, that is 1717 miles and I was using about 3 watts. The calculator says 572 miles per watt.  Pretty good stuff.

Of course, the guy on the other end is the one who has to hear my puny little signal in such situations.  Him being in a radio-quiet area probably helps.  And maybe he has a good modern receiver.  We really didn’t get into who was using what, just traded a signal report.
