Printers and Modems

[Today’s run: about 1.5 miles]

I’ve been in the “IT” business about 25 years now.  I started as a programmer and somehow ended up more on the system administration end.

Two technologies have haunted me for nearly that whole period of time.  Those are Printers and Modems.

When things work then life is smooth.  The paper comes out of the Printers.  The Modems talk to each other.  Everything is happy.  But when they don’t work it can be a real bear to try to figure out why.

Technology has moved along over that time.  People don’t use telephone modems very much anymore.  And printers almost never cause problems.  Then one day I’ll find out that something isn’t working right with a Printer or, even worse, a Modem.  If it takes more than a power-cycle to fix then you are in deep trouble because not many people know much about the old techniques of troubleshooting and debugging.

No.  I don’t own an RS-232 breakout box.  Do you?
