Bee Grass

[Today’s run: rest day]

One of the problems with bee hives is keeping the grass trimmed.  Bees don’t like lawnmowers or weed-whackers.  And we are not inclined to spray a bunch of herbicides around either.

If the grass gets too high it can start to impede the traffic in and out of the hive.  So about once a month we put on our bee suits and tackle the mowing and trimming.  I do some hand trimming and push mower while my wife does the riding mower.  We usually do it pretty early in the morning.

Some people put their bees on concrete.  I’ve read about people using old house shingles too.

I had this red shredded wood stuff left over from another landscaping project.  I was hoping it would keep the grass down a bit.  It has helped but we still have to trim and mow.
