Chicken Tractors and Chickens

Today’s Run: 55 min at the “Y”

We have been looking at chicken tractors.  I know I have told you before about my wanting chickens.  Now, I am getting them as a Christmas present from my son.  Cool Beans!  I now need to have a place to house them.

Enter the chicken tractor.

I have studied different designs of chicken tractors online and have finally decided on what I want for my very own chickens.  I want a coop part about 4 to 4 1/2 feet tall with a door that opens on the back from top to bottom (easier to clean that way).  This must be a covered coop, preferably with a white/light plastic/pvc type sheeting.  Attached to the coop, I would like to have a 2 1/2 to 3 feet high, run for the chickens (enclosed and covered also) and of course have the coop part with wheels to make the whole thing easier to relocate around the property.  The Taj Mahal of chicken tractors.

Now, we have priced supplies and Lowe’s and know approximately how much the supplies for this little project are going to run us~and then, of course is the labor, etc…..

Yesterday, I talked to a man in Terry, Mississippi, and he has advertised his chicken tractors online.  They are exactly like the one I described with a few “perks” that I had not thought about!  He builds lots of chicken tractors (think bulk orders for supplies), so his prices are almost exactly what we would be paying if we built it ourselves.  Nice!

I have now ordered a chicken tractor from this nice man and will pick it up the beginning if not the middle of next month.  He also has chickens and I will get a few laying hens (6) from him at the same time I pick up the tractor.

I am getting excited about this project!  He is knowledgeable about his chickens (and he is looking to get into bee keeping, but that is another story altogether…) and gave me a mini-chicken keeping lesson.  Good guy~
