A Promise Is A Promise

Today’s Run:  30 min walk

I promised you an update on my Christmas present radios today and having had a bit of time to spend online doing some research, I am ready to report.

The Philco.  This is a cute Bakelite table top radio.  Circa 1948 and retailed for $19.95.  It is in excellent condition.  There are no cracks in the case and the chassis is all intact.  It is missing the back cover but seeing as originally that was just a piece of cardboard, no big deal.  Great find!

The Polydyne:  This is a relatively rare radio from what I can determine!  Excellent!!!  It is a coffin style TRF radio circa 1921. Here is what I found out:

The company was originally the Freed-Eismann Co.  A Mr. “Charlie” Freshman purchased the company and was selling the radios under the Freshman label but seeing a way to make more money, began the Polydyne label and sold directly to department stores-going around sales men (aka: middle man) and pocketed a lot more cash.  However, his company only lasted about five years.  He had Sonora manufacture the cabinets for his Polydyne radios and they are a beautiful radio.  This radio originally retailed for $115.00.  That is a lot of money back in 1921-I would not spend that much on a radio today, for that matter!

So, there you have a thumbnail sketch of each radio.  Hope you found it as interesting as I did.  Merry Christmas to me!
