This morning’s plan was to grab another 10 miles. I headed on out the door with every intention of doing just that.
My route today was going to be Schaeffers Chapel 1.5 times. That equals 10 miles. On. The. Button.
Things have a was of changing mid run and today was one of those days when plans were changed.
See, when I run Schaeffer’s Chapel, I go north on Robinson and turn around in the MB Church parking lot and then go south on the same road~~~all the way to hwy 45S. I run along hwy 45S for close to .75 of a mile before I cross the 4 land hwy onto Schaeffer’s Chapel Road. I run to the Chapel and then retrace my steps. I run past the MB church and then back to Schaffer’s Chapel…blah, blah, blah…..
Today, after my second turn around at the MB Church, I met the cutest little old lady crossing the street to her mailbox. I mean, this lady is adorable! She is 94 years old. She was crossing this old country road with her walker…complete with the tennis balls on the legs. She is bent over with age and is as feisty as they come.
I have seen her many times, of course, but today was the first time we were within talking distance. You know, the distance where it would be very awkward if we ignored each other.
After a “Good morning!” from me, she stopped right smack dab in the middle of the road and started in with,
“I see you running up and down my road every. single. day.”
“Yes, Ma’am. I’m training for a race.”
“What race are you running?”
With that we were off chatting for close to a good half of an hour.
I complimented her on her flowers and told her that I had stopped a few days ago and taken some pics of them. I hope she didn’t mind.
She was very pleased about the pics and that I enjoy her flowers but was appalled at the condition of her flower bed. “Too overgrown” she said.
THAT got her going on her Okra seeds.
Apparently, she has had people stopping by her house wanting some of her Okra seeds and she has been turning them down. These Okra seeds have been handed down in her family for 140 years and she wasn’t going to be handing them out to strangers.
140 year old seeds. Boggles the mind.
Now, these aren’t your average Okra seeds. These seeds produce SMOOTH Okra pods. “Not those tough Okra pods you buy in the stores these days.” Good to know! I thought Okra was Okra was Okra.
She was extolling the virtues of her Okra seeds. Made Okra sound delicious! She was not going to be handing me any of those seeds. There was no doubt in my mind at all of that ever happening. 🙂
What a lovely break in my morning run. She was so much fun to chat with. The time flew by so fast that the next thing I knew, it was almost time for lunch! I was out of time for my run and I had to hightail it home.
We bid each other goodbye. She finished her shuffle to her mail box and I made a beeline for home.
So, no. I did not get my 10 miles in this morning. I got 7.20 miles.
