The Magic Distance

Training for this Ultra has probably been one of the most difficult things I have ever attempted.  Really.  Increasing my distance a little bit each week, well, it has totally drained me.

The Mississippi Summer weather has been unseasonably warm and humid.  It has sucked the life right out of me.  I am exhausted all the time and hardly have anything left in me from day to day.

So…..

I am done monkeying around with adding a mile on each week.  Done, I tell you!  Tomorrow I am going to try to do my longest training run for the Ultra.

Tomorrow, I am going to try to run 28 miles.

I have to know if I can do it.  The race is 44 days away.  I have plenty of time left to run this distance but if I can do it tomorrow, it will take away a lot of the anxiety of adding on a mile each week.

The longest I have successfully completed is close to 23 miles.  I know that ideally, this is a stretch to jump to this many miles.  Once I know I can complete this distance, though, I won’t have to run that far again before race day.  That is a comfort.  I would only have to run 20, 24 milers.  Sweet!

So, keep your fingers crossed for me tomorrow.  I am actually pretty excited to do this!  Woo-Hoo!

The other thing I have done is change my route.  I have been running on a very hilly highway between two towns.  It is a grueling run.  Absolutely no shade on that route whatsoever.  So, I am not going to run around our neighborhood.  It is an 8 mile route, out and back.  I will have to repeat this a few times to get all the miles in.  It has a tiny bit of shade and some hills but not a lot.  I am going to give it a try anyway.

That is the plan.  Think kind thoughts.  This will probably take me 6-7 hours.  I am a slow poke.   🙂  Here we go!
