Donkeys and Daffodils

Yesterday’s run was difficult.  The entire thing did not “flow.”  Every step was a challenge.  I pushed.  Hard.  Today, I decided, would be an easy run, so, I ran hills.

I have not run hills for about a week and a half.  It is surprising to me how quickly my legs forget how to do those hills!  My mantra is:  “Kill the Hills” and it works!  I forget that I am working hard and today was no different.  I did not worry about pace or cadence…all those things sorted themselves out.  It was lovely.

Spring is my favorite time of year here in Mississippi.  I think it is because it comes so early~right when you need it.  Right when you are soooo sick of Winter and think you cannot stand it for one more day, out pop some flowers and the trees begin to bud.  Love it!

Today’s run was lovely.  We have a great deal of wild Daffodils near our house.  On Evans Road (just adjacent to my street) there is a field, oh, about two acres, that is packed solid with these wild Daffodils.  It is awesome!!!

Daffodils are my favorite flower.  They are a happy flower.  When I was a little girl, I used to call them “Trumpet Flowers” because a) I could not remember their real name and b) I always thought that they trumpeted in Spring.  Yes, Daffodils are my favorite flower after all of these years.

Well, I was running past the field of Daffodils, reminiscing a little bit about calling them “Trumpet Flowers” when all of a sudden:  “HEE-HAW!!!!!”

I had forgotten that there are four donkeys that live in that field of Daffodils!  They were full of themselves this morning and were saying “Good Morning!” to me.

I must have jumped a mile!  All thoughts of Daffodils were wiped clean of my mind as I caught sight of those four mischievous donkeys.  They were happy to see me.

I was scolding myself.  This was not the first time that these donkeys had caught me unawares.  I think they do it on purpose.

I kept on running and so did they.  They followed me along the fence row as far as they could~Braying all the way.  They were having a good laugh at my expense.  They knew they had gotten me.  Silly donkeys.

That was on my way out.

On my way back, I was ready for them!  When I first caught sight of them, I started talking to them.

“Good morning, you silly donkeys.  I am ready for you this time.  You will not scare me on my way back home.  HA!”

I must have looked a sight.  I was all hot and sweaty and carrying on a conversation with four donkeys in a field.  Good thing no cars drove by, huh?

In keeping up my soliloquy with the donkeys, I was unable to linger and enjoy the field of daffodils.  That made me a little sad but doggone it, those donkeys were NOT going to get me again!  HA!

It was a lovely run this morning.  It was a nice sunny, breezy morning.  Tomorrow will be a longish run.  It is supposed to be a bit chilly.  I am supposed to have a running buddy with me, too.  I still need to call her and confirm.  She is not overly fond of cold weather so I may be doing my run by myself. Sure hope not but if I must, I must.  Fingers crossed.

On a side note:  Tomorrow is also the drawing for the ING NYC Marathon.  My name is in the hat.  Fingers crossed for my name to be drawn.  I have a 4% chance of getting into this race.  My hopes are up and then again not.  So, tomorrow, they will be drawing names in waves and letting us know by email.  I will be parked by my laptop all. day. long. tomorrow.  I’ll let you know one way or another.
