Today’s Run: Crutches…
Today my baby chickens turn seven weeks old. They are a joy to have in the house. Really!
If you have not figured out by now, I am an animal lover. I enjoy about every animal I have ever met, babysat or owned.
I was given my first dog, Doodle, when I was 4(?) years old. Our neighbor came over with this adorable Cocker Spaniel/Dachshund mix puppy. She (our neighbor) called the puppy “Doo-Doo.” She said that every little girl needed a dog. Of course she was right!
My mom promptly changed the dogs name to Doodle because she stated that she would not stand out on the porch calling, “Here, Doo-doo!” Doodle just sounded better. She was a great dog. The best.
Doodle would ride on my tricycle with me. She would ride in my wagon. She could fit in the bed of my toy dump truck and would ride there, too! She loved to ride!
I have progressed from dogs to cats, to horses, back to dogs, (we did all the rodents when the kids were little), back to cats and dogs, and now we have chickens added to the mix!
Chickens are awesome! The do take a bit of work but they are so much fun! They kinda pay their own way by laying eggs, too. My hens are starting to get a little old to be laying reliably so I got some baby chicks a week ago. They are seven weeks old now.
Those baby chickens are soooo funny! They talk a lot! The little stinkers can fly! That is a little inconvenient to have a chicken fly in the house but they don’t do it often.
The baby chickens are inquisitive! Snoopy.
In all their peeping, these are the things you can hear them saying to you:
“Whatcha, doing?”
“Is that something I can eat?”
“Do I need to be concerned about the cats?”
“I trust you to take care of me.”
I am loving the baby chicken stage. Before, I have always purchased my birds as adults. This babyhood thing is a first. My house does smell a bit (like a barn~ugh!) and I will be happy when they can live outdoors but this has been a blast!
They are still getting their feathers and with the extreme cold, it is too much for them to be outside. So, the back room it is. They are sharing that room with the bunny we are babysitting. It is working out fine.
Here is a pic of one of my funny, frizzly faces chicks. They look adorable when they are getting all their feathers~one of those, they are so ugly they are cute stages.
