Today’s Run:  5.13 miles

I collect antique radios.  TRF (Tuner Radio Frequency) radios are my favorite.  They have been around since before they made radios electrically powered.  You had to use a large battery to operate a TRF radio.

A requirement for me to even consider a radio is (well two requirements):  1) it must be a tube radio and 2) it must be AM only.

TRF radios are rare.  Well, TRF radios in decent condition are rare.  Finding one in operational condition is not going to happen.

I have three TRF radios.  These radios are AWESOME!  They have three very large dials on the front.  You must tune all three dials simultaneously to be able to receive your station.  Pretty cool, huh?  These radios came out for the public to purchase in the very early 1920’s.

TRF’s do not have a speaker in them.  This is back in the day of the horn speaker.  I do not have a horn speaker (much to my chagrin) and someday I hope to get one.  I do have the Tombstone speaker which came out originally in 1927. I have two of those.

Why am I telling you this?

Well…today I talked my husband into antique shopping.  Okay, it was his idea BUT he knew I wanted to find a “new” radio to add to my collection.  We stopped at two, count them TWO antique shops in town.  The only two shops we had not yet visited here in Columbus.  And do you know what we found?  Nothing.  Nope.  Nada.  Not a TRF.  Not a tube radio.  Shoot, not even an AM/FM radio~ There were not any  antique radios to be found in all of Columbus, Mississippi!

Oh well…the owner of the second antique shop told us about another antique shop in Vernon, Alabama…that is only 25 minutes away and we like Sunday afternoon drives!  Hmmm…
