Summer Heat In Mississippi

Today’s Run:  Rest Day

We live in the country just outside of Columbus, Mississippi and the weather is warming up!  Our property (just shy of 2 acres) only has two trees, trees that we planted two years ago.  The purpose of those trees was the hopes that in 5+ years, they would provide shade for the West side of the house.  They are young trees so it will be a while before we reap the benefits from those trees.  Patience is a virtue!

Last summer, we build an arbor (I call it an arbor, my husband calls it a pergola) on the South side of the house.  This has been a godsend already this Summer!  We used to have the sun beat into the house from around 11:00 am to early evening.  Our air conditioner ran full time and that side of the house was unbearable.  So, YAY for the arbor/pergola!

We have been hopeful of a cooler Summer this year but it does not look like it is meant to be.  Yesterday was 107 F. and it is only June!  We average 100 F-105 F. for most of the Summer here.  The humidity is right up there as well.  It takes about two weeks to adjust to the heat and I think we are about ready for the furnace weather of Summer.

The toughest part of Summer is running!  We have been leaving the house for our morning run at 5:30 but this morning at 5:30 it was already 78 F.!  Wowee!!  We may be bumping our early morning runs a bit earlier as we have our longer runs in preparation for our October marathon!  Thank goodness this morning is a rest day and we did not have to run.

Wish us luck as we prepare for the Marathon and train in our unique weather!  Training for a Marathon is a challenge regardless of the weather.  The thought that keeps us going is that our race is in Bar Harbor, Maine, so while our friends will still be running in the heat/humidity of home, we will be running in the crisp, cooler air of New England!  What a comforting thought!!!
