Today’s Run: 4 miles
Saturday’s blog was sad, sad, sad! Saturday was an “Oh, dreadful day!”. Today’s blog should prove to me much happier!!!
My husband and I discussed finding more hens to replace the two that I had lost. One to Marek’s Disease and the other one to ??? We do not know what was wrong with her. We just know that we had to put her down. Sad.
So, yesterday afternoon I was on Craigslist looking for people with hens. I stumbled upon a FB group for NE Mississippi that was strictly poultry people. I quickly applied to be on the group and they approved my application a while later.
I was scrolling through the posts and came upon one from a nice lady who lived about 20 minutes from us. She had 19 hens and 2 roosters she was trying to sell~quickly and inexpensively. I messaged her and we decided that I would come out and look at her flock. They were very nice birds. Healthy, happy and soon to be out of a home because the people were moving to a place that did not allow chickens. I came home with five new hens!
The new hens and my old hens are actually getting along pretty well! I am surprised!!! They are, of course, establishing the “pecking order”, determining who is top dog, so to speak. I have been bringing everyone treats~an ice breaker~everyone gets a treat…leftover risotto from lunch, some homemade bread, meal worms (those things creep me out!) and of course 22% protein laying pellet, grit and oyster shell. They all feel special and I think that is helping. I have not heard any major squabbling…except from the hen who was occupied in the nesting box when I brought out the risotto and she was afraid she would miss out (I saved her some:).
I should now have eggs, eggs, and more eggs! That is nice. I like to give them away to friends and family. Goodness knows that if I am getting nine (I now have 9 laying hens) eggs a day, multiplied by 7 days a week…well, you can do the math. It is a lot of eggs!
Here is a pic from last night of my new hens.
