Creaky old man

[Monday and Saturday: 3 miles]

My running mileage is kind of low for this past week. I’ve been slowly recovering from my maximum effort on the 12th at the Iowa Senior Games. I guess that means I really try my best!

I actually think my strategy for the 200 M race could use some work, so I’m hopeing to eventually get to try that one again. And my starting block technique needs some work. And I’m hauling a lot more weight than I should be… So stay tuned.

I’ve been enjoying my work these days. They tell us we will probably be back in the office in August sometime.

The Iowa State Fair is in August too! And after my 2 year anniversary at my job, I’ll be moving to 10 vacation days per year!

This fall we plan to go to NYC where my wife will run in the New York City Marathon. I think that is in October.

I’ve also been enjoying wearing my contact lenses for the last 6 weeks or so. I have skipped a couple of days but not many. I have a selection of drug-store reading glasses that I can choose from for computer work and for reading. I feel like my eyes are focusing better, they definitely get a better workout than when using my progressive eyeglasses. With the glasses I am always tilting my head to get the best focus. That probably gives me good motor skill with my neck muscles but my eye focusing muscles don’t need to work at all. With contacts and the fixed focus reading glasses I have to do some of the zoom in/out with the old eye muscles.

It could be my imagination, but I think that is helping.

I once worked a short time on a computer gig at a home-based business. This guy had three computers in a room of his house (I think it was), where people worked to match trucking loads with available truckers. Anyway, he had some eye exercise gizmos that he used which he claimed helped keep his eyes in good condition. He was not enthusiastic about eyeglasses at all.

I didn’t wear glasses at all until I was in college, I was probably at least 20 years old. I was doing a lot of close work and my first glasses were actually bi-focals. Later I had single-lens glasses and was able to do that for a long time. Then I went to progressive lenses.

Congrats on the run. I think of Iowa as being super un-fit soda pop guzzlers and could be wrong on that but if I am right then you are on the far end of the positive tale of that bell curve.

Eyeglasses and college – me too. I “discovered” that other people were okay reading the writing on the board up front in class when I was squinting. Duh. I am fine with glasses but think if I lived where it gets cold and they fog up then I’d go with contacts.

Vacation. Mixed bag. I understand wanting more vacation time but it’s not all that (sorry!). I have 35 days this year not yet assigned. Problem is, when I go away, nobody covers for me and if they did, it would take too long to document my processes as operational procedures beforehand and there’d be a big mess waiting for me to clean up when I returned, regardless. It’s less painful to just let me do it. My managers check email and take meetings when on vacation – which ruins the point of it. Bah! We live where it “feels like vacation” evenings and on the weekend so I am not complaining – but miss being able to fly cross country to visit people as much as I’d like for as long as I’d like. (Psst! – living on water is about as good as it gets to me for peace and relaxation owing to environment. Doesn’t matter what kind of water, really. The water we live on is mud at low tide. But there is _something_ about it.)
