HP 105A crystal oscillator

[Monday’s run: 3.4 miles, Tuesday: 0]

There was an interesting selection of auction stuff recently from an FCC site in Georgia.  I bid on a couple of things but ended up as the sole bidder on an HP 105A crystal oscillator.

It turned out that the nice people at that FCC office were willing to arrange the boxing and shipping if I could get them a prepaid UPS label, which I did.  That saved me probably 30-40 dollars against having the local UPS Store pick it up and box it.

So the 105A turned up on Monday and I plugged it in and here it sits.

I plan to let it warm up for a few days and then try to get an ADEV plot of it vs. my GPSDO.  Since they use similar crystal oscillators as the basis, I’m not sure that I will see much.  Over a long, long, long timeframe, the theory is that the GPS disciplined oscillator will adjust via the GPS while the non-disciplined oscillator will slowly drift due to crystal aging.

I’m not sure how much is “long, long, long”.  I guess I can leave them both plugged in and doing the readings for a month or so, as long as I can keep my computer up and capturing the data.

Stay tuned for more excitement on this front.
