More pergola work

[Yesterday: 2 miles run/walk, today: 1.5 miles walk]

Here’s a photo from last night’s pergola progress.  We have two of our post/beam assemblies in place.  There are two more to go.

The white posts are cedar,  reclaimed lumber from a friend’s house.  Since they are mounted on pillars they don’t have any rotational strength.  I’ll have to put in some knee-bracing do do that job.  The other posts are 4×4, embedded 3 feet in the ground.  I probably don’t need the bracing so bad on that side.

After the bracing, the next part is to get 2×6 pieces on top of our beams, parallel to the house and up on edge.  They will provide some shade when the sun is not directly overhead.  And they will support the wisteria or whatever else we grow up there.

I plan to come back and trim a bit off of the beam ends to make them look more artsy.

We did not tie this into the house, mainly because we don’t want the wisteria to climb all over the house.  So this structure is about 18 inches away from the roof of the house.  That will give us room to run a saw/trimmer/clipper/whatever between the house and the pergola and keep the wisteria under control.
