Independence Day

[Today’s run: Limerock Road 4.0 miles]

We went over to Starkville for a cookout with family today.  That was a lot of fun.

We took along some fireworks: bottle rockets, firecrackers, sparklers and a few smoke bombs.  I tried to get a picture of a packet of firecrackers going off.  It looks like about how my ears felt!

I enjoy July 4th.  I am not a big fireworks kind of guy but I always like a picnic and lots of food.  When we lived in Estes Park I would sometimes walk up the hill from our house and watch the fireworks over the lake.  Then in Fort Collins we did a bit of stuff in the backyard but otherwise did not go to the public displays.

The states where I have lived have always been non-fireworks states. You could drive to a neighboring state and buy firecrackers and whatnot and probably would not get into any trouble if you kept your usage to a minimum and otherwise didn’t cause the neighbors reason to call the police about it.  But here in Mississippi there is a fireworks store about 5 miles from our house, glad to take our money and blow it up in a puff of smoke.

Anyway, the kids enjoyed the bit of fireworks that we had, so it was cheap fun and nobody got hurt and the house didn’t burn down.  So it was a success.
