Home of the Throwed Rolls

Today’s Run:  Sat in the car for 15 hours

The last day of our travels today took us from Des Moines, Iowa to our final destination, Columbus, Mississippi.  It is good to be home.

Travelling means eating out and you tend to find some quirky places along the way.  That was the case today as we drove through Southern Missouri.  We passed some billboards for “The Home of the Throwed Rolls”.  Aside from the improper grammar, we were intrigued.  Surely they don’t throw the food at this establishment!

But they do!

And they throw the food from the far side of the restaurant!

We arrived at Lambert’s Cafe at 10:30 this morning (throwedrolls.com) right when they were opening and we were one of the first groups seated.  This also meant that the rolls were right out of the oven.  Yummy!  They smelled great.

They had this guy walking around the dining area yelling, “Hot rolls!” and you raised your hand.  He then proceeded to yank a roll out of the pan and throw it football style from the opposite side of the restaurant to where you were seated, eating your dinner.  It was your job to catch it.

We placed our order and watched as people with large metal mixing bowls walked around and asked you if you would like,

fried okra

fried potatoes and onions

macaroni and tomato salad…

And they then took a ladle and gave you some from the bowl and placed it on your plate.  No extra charge.  Cool Beans!

So, we ate our lunch, had some okra, a little black eyes peas and watched as the majority of the people managed to catch their rolls.  We then paid our tab and left.

And the answer to the question I know you are wondering, Yes, I caught my roll.
