Mowing

Today’s Run:  4.20 miles

Today was a day of mowing.  Actually it was a day of yard work but primarily a day of mowing.  Mowing our property takes on average two complete hours.

We have just a little shy of two acres and lots of obstacles to mow around.  The East side of the house is a joy, there is nothing but straight passes and you can try to get the lines from the mower ruler straight.  The South side of the house is where we have been building the pergola/arbor and there are still a few board and markers in the yard so you have to stay on your toes.  The West side is not much fun.  There are the wild plum trees, one ham radio tower, three guy wires and four crepe myrtles to traverse.  Tricky.  The North side (front of the house) is smallish and just straight passes again.

The trickiest part of the yard is the SE corner of the house right up to the field.  That is where the bee hives are.  Mowing around the bees is a delicate thing.  You never know what kind of mood they will be in and finding the time of day with the right temperature, wind, sunshine, luck…fools tread lightly.  So I put it off as long as possible.

Today was the day.  I HAD to mow around the bees.  The grass was a bit higher than my knees and there is just no excuse for me letting it get that high.  Yes, that means “suiting up” in the middle of the day and hoping for the best.  And that is what I did.  Right after lunch.  Then right after folding a load of laundry.  Then running the sweeper after that…Alright.  I stalled quite a while then finally went out and did it.

Only got “buzzed” a couple of times.  No stings!  The bees were in a good mood!  Success.  If it turns cool enough, enough maybe I can put it off again until next season?
