This is my favorite day of the year. Very seriously love this day!!! This is the day MFH (My Favorite Husband) became MFH and I became his wife.
Because this is my favorite day, I need to share my favorite story of how this all came to be.
It was the first day of 8th grade and we were in our homeroom. The school year hadn’t even officially begun. Our homeroom teacher was passing out the various papers that were required, you know, all the nonsense stuff. She made it to the milk passes. *Milk passes were a punch card. You paid X dollars to get a certain number of punches on your card. Each punch was good for one single serve carton of milk.
There were two milk passes missing. The two missing passes belonged to MFH and to myself. Soon, we found ourselves walking down the hallway towards the principals office. We had been sent to retrieve the missing milk passes.
THAT is how we met!
I don’t really remember a thing about going into the office. What I DO remember is thinking, “He’s kind of cute!” The next thing I know we were back in our homeroom, milk passes in hand, the bell ringing and the school year was under way.
Something happened in that hallway that morning because we became great friends! All through the rest of Jr. High and High School, we were pretty much together. He dated a few different girls and I dated a few different guys but we always came back to each other.
High school ended. I went to college in Pennsylvania and he went to college in Arkansas (and then transferred to Iowa State University). We wrote. Got together over our breaks, that kind of thing. Every now and then we would date other people but still would always come back to each other.
College graduation arrived and I took a teaching position in Virginia. He still had a year to go at Iowa State to finish up his degree because he had changed majors. Virginia wasn’t my cup of tea so I returned home at Christmas.
The day after Christmas was a Wednesday. I saw him at church Wednesday evening. After church we went to McDonald’s and had some fries or something. We had a very serious talk that night! That was when we started dating seriously.
We had a date Thursday night, Friday night, Saturday night and on Sunday we got engaged! You could choose to say we dated for 9 years OR 4 days. You can pick which story suits you best. Hahaha!!!
On May 24, 1985, we said our “I do’s” and we’ve been married, as of today, 31 years! How totally and completely awesome is that!?! This has been the best 31 years of my life!!!
Marriage isn’t always all giggles and grins but a promise is a promise and I promised, “Till death do us part.” I meant every word of that.
I’m officially signing up for a minimum of another 31 years. Let’s see…that would make us 85 years young. Sure hope we have a lot more years than that!
Happy Anniversary to my husband. God knew what he was doing that day when those milk passes were left out of that homeroom packet!
