Krispy Kreme

As most of you know by now, I live in Mississippi.  I really like living here.  The people are great!  It is pretty.  I actually like the hot/humid weather, too!  There is one thing about Mississippi that tickles my funny bone, though.  Restaurants.

When a new restaurant opens in my town, it is a huge deal!  Mississippians know how to eat!  There is no other way to say it.  According to research(?), Mississippi is the fattest state in the nation.  Dubious distinction, huh?  What people in Mississippi lack in healthy eating, they more than make up for it in kindness and friendliness!  Mississippians are great people!

Today was grocery store shopping day.  I elect to do my grocery shopping at WalMart.  We have a Kroger in my town but they do not have a very good selection and my bill usually runs $50.00-$75.00 more than when I shop at WalMart.  I cannot justify throwing away that kind of money.

Anyway, #1 son came with me on this shopping expedition and we made it out of WalMart unscathed.  Driving home, we passed the Krispy Kreme store.  The light was on signifying that they had just finished a batch of donuts.  The place was packed!  I guess people were in the mood for fresh donuts today.  Seeing how busy the store was, it brought to mind the day the store opened.

See, Krispy Kreme made a bit Toot about opening a store in our town.  Big adds.  Billboards.  Newspaper and TV spots…everything.  The people in my town were salivating for fresh, hot donuts!

Finally, opening day arrived.  The fresh donuts sign was lit the entire day!  Krispy Kreme could not keep up with the orders!  They baked/fried donuts as fast as they could.  There began to be a bottleneck of traffic on the highway and traffic began to back up for miles.  Literally!

Finally, someone notified our local police department.  Now, this is the funny part…The police had to come and direct traffic for the opening of the donut store!!!  They eventually had to close down a lane of traffic to accommodate all the people coming to purchase donuts!  They kept that lane of traffic closed off for two days!!!  That is how long it took for the enthusiasm to die down and the traffic pattern to get back to some normalcy.   Funny but sad, too.

So, now we have a Starbucks opening up here shortly.  Do you think that they will get the grand reception that the Krispy Kreme got?  I’m thinking, not.  I mean, I appreciate a good cup of coffee but most of us here don’t have the extra cash that you need for a Starbucks when you can get a couple of donuts for the same price.  HA!

*for the record:  We have only visited the Krispy Kreme twice since it opened 1 1/2 years ago.  I’m not a donut fan for the most part but MFH (My Favorite Husband) loves them.    🙂
