Peter (the Rooster) and His Girlfriend

Peter, my Rooster, has fallen in love.

You would think that this lovely hen would swoon at all the attention he is giving her but, alas, that is not the case.  In fact, what is happening is she is playing “Hard to get.”  She is doing her darnedest to avoid poor Peter and his affections.

Greta is the object of Peter’s young love.

Greta is a Barred Rock Hen.  She is a very pretty hen.  Maybe that is why Peter has fallen so hard for her.

She has always been rather aloof.  The other hens have accepted this and as a rule do not do much socializing with her.  I guess you could almost call her a “Stick in the Mud.”  Peter does not care.  He looks at her through star struck eyes.  Poor Peter.  He has his work cut out for him!

Peter has taken to following (stalking?) Greta around the chicken yard.  He crows frequently, telling her of his feelings for her.  She does not care.  She flies up on top of the chicken tractor to avoid his ardor.  He is not easily dissuaded. It is an ongoing battle day in and day out.

Greta will hide inside the chicken tractor in the early mornings to make sure that Peter is out of the way before she comes out to get her breakfast.  Peter is no dumb bunny, he watches for her.  As soon as she tip-toes cautiously out of the tractor, he bursts into song and tries to catch her.

Sometimes Greta is lucky and can hop up onto the top of the tractor before Peter reaches her and sometimes, well…Peter and his youthful ardor, wins.

Peter is oblivious to the other hens.  He only has eyes for Greta.

What will become of our star struck young Rooster?  Will Greta give him the cold shoulder enough times to discourage him?  Only time will tell.  In the meantime, I get to listen to Peter sing his little Rooster heart out to the love of his life, Greta.
