I am NOT the Chairman of the Board. My husband is. I am on the Board of Directors, though, of a Non-Profit Agency! How cool is that!?!
The Agency? Classic Book Radio Corporation. The Board consists of two people, my husband and myself. It is a long story so pull up a chair…
My husband and I are both Ham Radio Operators. His call sign is w0ep and I am w5msh. As “hams” we are on the lookout for quirky things related to anything radio~my husband more than I. He found out the FCC is going to be handing out some low-frequency FM radio licences here in a few weeks…the first time since 2000. They are only allowing a two week window to apply, so you have to be “johnny on the spot”!
He decided to go for it!
First things first, you need to be a Non-profit Agency. You need a mission statement, you need special this and special that…We have the Non-profit hurdle passed. We are a Non-Profit now~signed, sealed and notarized by the state of Mississippi. Now, on to federal levels…
Our Non-profit agency is designed to improve literacy in the state. Mississippi has a low literacy rate. Our agency is wanting to improve that. How?
1) By exposing the citizens of Mississippi to classic works of literature through radio broadcasting. 2) To thereby increase interest in literature and improve literacy and 3) To therein provide and educational listening experience.
We have access to classic literature recordings, ie: Pride and Prejudice, Moby Dick, etc. and want to have continuous broadcasts of these books on FM radio. The hope is that some person will listen, get hooked on the story and go to the library and check out the book to finish reading it on their own! Would not that be cool?
Bear in mind that this is LOW-Frequency. We would not be covering a large geographical area. Our town, Columbus, Starkville, West Point, etc. I do not think it would reach east into Alabama even though we are really close the the state line. But it would be a start.
We already have a 60′ tower in our yard due to my husband’s activity in ham radio. All we would need to do is obtain a transmitter and a few other various and sundry items and Voila’! We would be on the air!
How exciting is that!?!
So, yes, I am on the Board of Directors of a Non-Profit Agency. Who would have thought it!?!
