The Little Neighbor Boy and The Chickens

Today’s Run:  11.43 miles

We have a little neighbor boy.  He is around six year old~cute as can be.  He likes to come to our house.  He just learned to ride his bicycle without training wheels so he is enjoying his new found freedom.

Our little neighbor boy (Braxton) just received permission to ride his bike as far as our house.  Before that, he had to stop at the middle house so his Mama could still see him.  I think they trust us because our house is kind of out of sight when he is riding his bike.

A couple of days ago, Braxton came over and asked if he could see the chickens.  I told him he had to ask permission first.  He lit out of here back home as fast as he could go!  I ran into the house and asked my husband to take an egg down to a nesting box so Braxton could “find” it.

We no sooner got that done that here came Braxton.  He was a happy guy.  Mama said yes!

We walked down to the chicken tractor with some homemade bread for the chickens.  Braxton carefully broke the bread into small pieces to feed the chickens.  They put on a show jumping all over each other trying to get the bread before another chicken beat them to it.  He was loving it!

Then we checked the nesting box and would you believe it, there was an egg!  Braxton was so excited!!!

“Is this a chicken egg?” he asked.

“Yes”

“Does it have a yolk?” asked Braxton.

“Yes, it has a yolk.”

He took off for home as fast as his 6 year old legs would take him and stopped at the middle house,

“I gotta show my Mama!  Thank you!”

He was back today.  He wanted to visit the chickens.  This time there was no opportunity to plant an egg.  I told him, sure he could visit the chickens!  We went and I had my fingers crossed.

We peeked into the nesting boxes and Whew~!  There was an egg!  A green egg from one of my Easter Eggers.  I told him he needed to eat it with some ham.  I do not think he got it~my sense of humor kind of grows on you…

He petted one of the hens while I held her and remarked on how soft she was.  Then again, off he went for home with his green egg.  A thank you from him and a reminder from me to wash his hands after petting the chicken and he was gone.

Wonder when he will be back?
