Good Mama

We are down to one chick now.  One of the two remaining chicks was not looking so great last night and had expired by morning.  This raising chicks is a tough business.  I don’t think that Rover or I had any idea what we were getting ourselves into.

Rover likes table scraps and hasn’t had any for quite a while.

When I take the leftovers from meals out to the chickens, they come running.  Literally!  Because Rover was broody, she refused to come down from the nesting boxes to get any of the food.  She missed out on a lot of tasty stuff, too.

Today, she and the last baby are in the solarium.  They are still living in Loki’s (the bunny) first bunny box.  They have plenty of room and seem content.  They don’t have to deal with the extreme heat we are still having, so (at least I hope!) they are a bit more comfortable.

Anyway, we had tuna sandwiches for lunch.  There was just a tiny bit of tuna left over from lunch.  Normally, I would take that outdoors to the chickens but today, I decided to give it to Rover.  She was so excited!  Leftovers!  Yummy!!!

The baby really didn’t know what to think of the blob of stuff I gave them but Rover sure did.  First thing, she ate a bit ~ then the next thing was so sweet!

Rover made a new noise.  I had never heard her do it before, but the chick knew what she was saying and came running over to its Mama.  Next, Rover picked up a piece of tuna and “nibbled” it into a teeny tiny piece and set it down in front of the chick.

The chick immediately gobbled it up and peeped asking for more.

Rover kept on nibbling pieces of tuna and giving them to the chick.  The chick was eating the tuna as fast as Rover could nibble it into chick size pieces.  I think that was the sweetest thing I have ever watched!

What a good Mama!
