Long Run In The Rain

Today was my long, slow run.  In the rain.

Yesterday was supposed to be my long, slow run day but guess what?  It was raining yesterday, too.  So, today, I decided to run anyway.  After all, it might rain on race day, right?

MFH (My Favorite  Husband) dropped me off at the Shell Station and then took off to deposit my water stops.  We did not talk again until I had reached the next Shell Station~17 miles later.  (I call him at that Shell Station to let him know to begin the trek to Starkville to pick me up.  He can stop by and retrieve all the other water stops on his way to get me.  It works out pretty well.)

Since it was raining, the run went slower than it normally would have.  It was coming down pretty good and motorists definitely were not looking for runners.  I got some rather odd looks from people…looks of, “Lady, don’t you know it’s pouring out!?!”  It was kinda funny, really.

Then, there was the rouge semi driver who thought it was great fun to blow by me and drench me in spray from his truck…and the teen driver who thought it was even more fun to hit the large puddles as he/she went by.  Needless to say, I got very, very wet on my run today.

I have been trying different things as far as electrolytes are concerned.  I have had a little bag of rock salt and I have been sucking on the salt as I run.  Today, I used the salt and Gatorade.  No Gu.  It actually worked pretty well!  Of course, it was not blazing sunshine or anything so next week may be different.  It was just nice to not have a crunchy layer of salt all over me when I was done with the run.

The only thing that was a definite “Boo” about the run was the shower afterwards.  Seeing as I had gotten very, very wet, that meant that I had chafed.  A lot.  I hopped into the shower and no matter which direction I turned, my skin sizzled!  Ouch!!!   But, I lived to tell the tale   🙂

So that is today’s run.  22 miles.  5 hours.  I am going to go and eat now.
