Yard Drain

[Yesterday’s run: 3.4 miles]

Yesterday our son worked on a project for me in the yard.

The downspout over our front porch is directed into a pipe in the ground.  When we first moved to this house it was not apparent where that pipe went.  During heavy rainstorms the water would just back up in the pipe and flood the front porch slab.

Later, on a dry day I sprayed the garden hose on the roof and looked for wet spots in the lawn.  Sure enough, the pipe ended in the dirt about 20 feet away.At that time I dug a bit of hole to unclog the pipe and I put some spare bricks in the hole.   I attempted to set the bricks with the holes horizontal so that dirt wouldn’t fill in too fast and plug the drain again.

Yesterday I purchased a plastic lawn sprinkler-type drain box and #1 Son dug out the old bricks.  We had to lower the drain pipe a bit, which was done by digging back another 3-4 feet and putting in a slanting section of drain pipe down to the box level.

We haven’t had any rain since yesterday, but the plan is that the water will come freely down the drain pipe into the box and then overflow the box on to the grass nearby.  The drain pipe is 3″ PVC and the box is big enough to move that much water out on to the grass.   The top of the box is at grass level and shouldn’t give the mower any problems.
